Recap and homework

Hello 9s,

In class today you had a homework check on your character grid and an in-class mini-quiz on Nouns (proper and possessive).

We discussed factors that influence perspective and you spoke of ideas like:
Time, region, location, experience, angle, mood, information, 'how we look at it', how we are feeling, what the circumstances are, age, background and many other factors.

You noted how, when looking at (M.C. Escher's stairs, we felt ill-at- ease initially. We had a difficult time making sense of it. With time and closer looking (including changing our orientation to the image), it began to become more approachable. Nice work everyone!

Due Tuesday October 3/17:

  • Finish the two questions on the back of your 'The Friday Everything Changed' sheet. Use P.E.E  format (see notes in notes tab to review) This will be marked at quiz weight.
  • Please edit the word 'effect' (noun) to read 'affect' (verb) and note: proof reading is key! : P
  • Write the definitions for the terms on your'Point of view' handout, you will find these on the Class notes tab on the blog. This will be a homework check.
Have a terrific weekend everyone!

Home work and a review of class today

Hello 9s,

Today you worked with art images and noted what you saw there.
You noted that some things seemed apparent initially and others could be understood/seen with help/practice/discussion/looking again and again.

When asked what influenced what you saw and how you interpreted what you saw you told us:

  • your past experiences informed you.
  • your position in the room influenced you.
  • your vocabulary effected you.
We next reviewed the English Grammar hand out  regarding how to properly write/punctuate proper nouns and possessive nouns.

Finally, you received a worksheet on the story 'The Friday Everything Changed'. You read aloud and we discussed the story's beginning regarding the setting and the characters. Your powers of deduction are being honed!

For homework due next class Sept. 29th:
  1. Finish reading The Friday Everything Changed by Anne Hart
  2. Fill out the chart (rough draft) noting:
    • who is/are the character/s? (Character/s)
    • What do they want?(Their interest/perspective)
    • What influences how they see things (What effects their view?)
    • What can they do? (What might be their position?)
There will be a homework check on this work at the start of class Friday.

Thank you for your energy and participation today!

Paragraphing Homework Due Next class

Hello 9s,

It was lovely to meet many of your parents last night. I was able to tell them a little of what we have been doing and how well I am enjoying working with you all. I'd like to commend you on your focus and diligence last block; well done.

Yesterday we:
  • Looked over your homework/topic sentences and made modifications/additions where needed
  • Reviewed paragraph format and began planning/outlining the paragraphs you are going to hand in next block.
  • You asked lots of excellent questions and offered ideas that showed me you are engaged in your learning. Thanks.
For Homework Due Monday Sept. 25th:
  • Type up a final draft of your paragraph.
  • Check for spelling, punctuation and grammar, of course.
  • I will mark most heavily on FORM however, since that is the aim of this lesson.
  • Please see your template and the notes attached below to review form. This is your rubric/map.
  • Remember the topic is Digital Citizenship and you may choose to reference the article we read(linked on previous post) OR you may provide your own examples on this same topic. Again, we are focussing on form.
  • While paragraph structure is similar to essay structure, be careful not to create multiple paragraphs.
I look forward to reading your work.
Ms. S

PointTopic sentence/thesis: What you will show or prove (please embed class questions in your topic sentence)

Example: example of your above assertion (when writing about literature this will be drawn from the text as a quote or reference). Otherwise, it may be an example from life or a statistic/research finding.

Explanation: Expand/analyze for your reader, the relationship between your example and the original assertion/idea. How should we think about your example?

Conclusion: Summarize/emphasis the truth in your topic sentence. This part answers “So what?”

A small bit of homework/review

Hello 9s,

Last class we reviewed your calendar assignments and considered multiple ways in which to be prepared for the complexities of your schedules and working styles. We will continue to check in with how your methods are working for each of you.

We looked at : Digital Citizenship & How to write a basic paragraph (see below)

Due next class, Sept. 21/17 is your topic sentence for the paragraph summary of the article we read,  'Be a Good Digital Citizen'.
This topic sentence ought to include:

  • a full sentence (subject and verb ...) that declares what your paragraph's message will be.
  • 2 or 3 supporting points to indicate the intention of the upcoming paragraph. These may (or may not) be drawn from the examples provided in the article, 'Be a Good Digital Citizen'.
  • ex. My dog is the best dog ever; he is smart, loving and he even does chores!  Here we see a declaration that I will prove in my paragraph; "my dog is the best." The way I intend to prove it is to show you how 1. smart 2. loving and 3. chore-doing he is.
I will give you credit for your best attempt at this homework, provide feedback and then you will write the rest of the paragraph Sept. 21. in class.
